The option of abortion should be available twice in a normal, healthy woman’s lifetime. If she is in danger, then I agree that an emergency abortion is necessary- also twice. But, to allow people to go into the clinic as many times as they desire is just stupid and careless.
Every healthy woman has the right to do with her body as she chooses. If the condom breaks, or the pill isn’t strong enough to do its job, then we cannot fault her for accidentally getting pregnant. She tried to stop pregnancy, and couldn’t. If she is too young, or without the means to raise a child at that time, it is better to abort the child than to allow it to be born. Things like adoption and single parenting are more touchy subjects because they harm both mother and child, and can scar them both for life.
Sometimes planned pregnancies have complications that were unseen. Sometimes the mother will die if she continues to carry the child, and that child cannot be saved along with the mother. So, yes, she should also be given the right to an abortion.
But I have seen a woman that was no stranger to the clinic, having 8 abortions in 3 years. To me, that’s sick. After the second abortion, she should have been scheduled for a “female operation”, because she obviously didn’t want children. Same goes for those with complications. If a woman has to have an emergency abortion twice, then her reproductive organs should be taken out. Obviously she cannot have children safely, and wasn’t meant to.
I agree that my body is my body, and I have a right to do with it whatever I want. But, there is a limit that should be set. If I try to cut my arm, and I have to go to the hospital, I go into therapy for suicide. If I use drugs and overdose yet survive, I go to rehab. If I try or succeed at killing someone, I go to jail. There are consequences to all our actions, male and female. But, there aren’t any legal consequences to abortion. To allow people to make the same mistake over and again is unproductive. The only woman that should be allowed to have an abortion as many times as they need are victims of rape. But, that only counts for a pregnancy resulted from a rape. When you take away a woman’s choice to have sex, you have taken away her responsibility for the pregnancy. But, not every abortion is because the woman was raped. Those women ARE responsible, and should be held accountable for their actions.
Those that do not learn from their mistakes become the mistake.
