Many people tend to overspend when they go shopping, Often enough, they do not even realise it. They have made lists and have every intention of sticking to them no matter what. With everything well-organised, one would expect that everything would go smoothly. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.
Why it is so easy to spend more at the shops than you planned to
Friends and family can force their opinions on you
When you go shopping with friends or family members, it is easy to be influenced by their personal preferences and end up spending more than you can afford. This is especially true if it is usually too difficult for you to say no. If you notice that every time you go shopping with friends or family members you end up spending too much money, because you purchase the most expensive items that they happen to like, that it is time to break that bad habit. Start going shopping alone, or at least, with people that are not dangerous enough for your pocket.
People with bad spending habits
If your preferred company during shopping consists of people with bad spending habits, maybe it is time to reassess the situation. These are people who do not know how to manage their finances properly and if you tend to go shopping with them often, you need to carefully consider the negative impact on you. If you often get carried away by those people and end up buying a lot of unnecessary things each and every time, or most of the time, then it is time to draw the line. Gently yet firmly, explain to them that you prefer going shopping alone from now on, as this allows you to be more concentrated and self-disciplined.
Extensive use of credit cards
The more you use credit cards for purchases, the easier it is to overspend. What happens with credit cards, is that you cannot understand immediately exactly how much you spend for every purchase, therefore you keep on buying more and more. If you use more than once credit cards for purchases, it is even more difficult to lose control, as you cannot possible remember which credit card you used every time. The best solution in such a case is to switch to cash. With cash, you can only spend what you can really afford, therefore you won’t be able to overspend even if you want to.
The above tips can help everyone spend less money at the stores on a regular basis. The more you incorporate them in your daily life, the easier the adjustment will be.
