Every woman must have the right to choose what to do with her body. Rape is very common; Women cannot always control what happens to their body. It is inhumane to force a rape victim to carry a baby conceived in a violent crime. In all other circumstances, I personally think abortion is murder. When young I decided that “commando” birth control was the way to go to avoid putting myself in the position of an unexpected pregnancy. I feel one should use so many methods of birth control at once so that pregnancy is extremely unlikely. However, should a pregnancy occur it is every woman’s right to make her own decision as to how to proceed.
Young women are getting pregnant at ever earlier ages today. Is a 12 year-old ready to be a mother ? I think not. I was once at the doctor’s office waiting in an exam room and I heard the doctor bellow: you think you are pregnant ? to the young woman who had just been in the waiting room with me. It was clear she was not getting a nurturing environment in which to decide what to do about her pregnancy. She probably wasn’t getting much help from her boyfriend either. Most of the young women I’ve seen get pregnant were abandoned by their boyfriends by the time the baby arrived. There seems to be a “not my problem” mindset by boyfriends whom have created life but are not willing to be fathers.
I knew I had to break up with one boyfriend when he was making comments about one of his brother’s wives that now that she had kids she never looked pretty or wore makeup anymore. I replied that she was a mother now. He clearly was not going to be a good father and I doubted that he’d be there for me if I got pregnant. He had to go. Being a woman is complicated; no one has the right to tell a woman what to do with her body. It appalls me when I see politicians pontificating on the topic of abortion. Abortion is terrible, but sometimes, like in rape, it is needed.
