Many people collect artefacts and memorabilia as a way of making money. Is it possible to know what the next big thing is? It is, and here’s the good news, its not difficult! The sure-fire way to make money by collecting has the following 5 simple steps.
1. Decide who has money. Note, it is usually those who have no children dependent on them, but who are not spending all their money on a good time or are not mortgaged up to the hilt or paying high rents relative to their salaries. Basically, this means that you are looking at people who are in their late-40s to early fifties and onwards.
2. Remember that men are more likely to engage in the ‘memorabilia-type’ of collecting.
3. Think what things were popular amongst men when those who are currently, say, 40-45 were (a) children and (b) teenagers.
4. Buy memorabilia related to those things now (while it is cheap) and prepare to sell it on at a profit in 5 years time or so.
5. In the meantime, sit back and enjoy the things you buy .
This model accounts for the timing of the huge increase in prices in all of the following areas.
Steam railway models and toys
Rupert Bear annuals (UK readers will understand this!)
Dr Who memorabilia of all sorts
Records from the late 1950s to the 1960s.
Music memorabilia of the same period.
As a prediction, the next big thing (its already started slightly, but there’s still a chance to pick up some items chearly) is punk rock memorabilia and obscure punk records (must be vinyl).
