How to Reduce the Amount of Money you Spend Commuting

For most people, commuting is an unavoidable part of the working day, as they live out of town or in an area where there are no jobs and so are forced to find employment elsewhere. Clearly, when your job is miles away from where you live it’s going to take awhile to get to your workplace and so you take the most convenient option, which is usually your car. However, although it may be convenient to jump in your car every morning, this may not be the cheapest option, and so if you want to save money on your commute you might want to think of other alternatives.

You could always decide to use public transport, as this usually works out cheaper than going by car and can also give the opportunity to read or get some work done while you don’t have to worry about getting stopped at traffic lights or dealing with errant drivers, either. You can also feel good about yourself, since you’re doing your bit to help the environment, opting for the more fuel efficient options available to you.

If you want an even cheaper way to commute to work, though, you could always ride a bicycle there or walk. Obviously, if your place of work is 100 miles from your home, it isn’t very plausible to walk or cycle the whole way. However, you could always combine the use of public transport with walking or cycling. If your workplace is reasonably close you could walk or cycle the whole way.

Your fitness levels will probably determine how far you consider manageable. If you’re very fit, cycling 20 miles there and 20 miles back may seem like nothing. Another benefit of cycling and walking is that you get to keep fit while travelling to work, thus saving you money on gym membership! You’ll be less likely to fall ill, which could reduce the amount of time you take off work.

If you don’t like the thought of getting active on the journey to work, though, you could continue to drive to work, but take others with you. Your colleagues could then make a contribution to your fuel costs, or you could share the responsibility of driving between you.

However you choose to go about it, it is possible to save money when commuting to work. You might have to readjust your schedule slightly to give yourself enough time to get to work, but the money you save will more than make up for any inconvenience caused by this.
