As children get older their “toys” get more and more expensive. They want computers, the latest fashion, and every other new gadget or game that comes out in the market. And most of them end up getting part time or summer jobs to help pay for these items. However, there are rules to getting jobs when you are under the age of 18 that may or may not require a work permit. Generally, minors 14 to 17 will need one or will be asked for one if not by the state then employer.
The federal government actually doesn’t require minors to get work permits, it is more for the employers. It helps protect the employer from prosecution for giving a job to someone who is under age. Some states require them, it is different in every state. Your child’s school may be able to help you if you don’t know if your child needs a work permit or not, or you can contact the Department of Labor and they will give you the information you need.
An example of the process of getting a minor’s work permit would be complete an application for a certificate of age, a parent or guardian will be required to sign the form after it is filled out. Also you will have to get a copy of an official documents that proves the age of the applicant i.e. birth certificate, passport, school records etc. Take a photo (head shot) and have it printed on photo paper and send it to the Department of Labor.
However, there are many websites that will help you find what you must do in your own state. Most of the time you are able to Google this information, but there are other sites that may be useful. One of the more useful websites is SHRM; it shows almost every state and the requirements of getting a work permit.
Besides the permit, there are child labor laws you may want to look through and be sure your child is being treated fairly and according to the law.
