Saving money takes practice and discipline, but you can do it and in the long-run you will be happy you made the choice. Following is a few tips on how to save money, but it is really up to you.

One way to save money is to change your cable program package, ask yourself, do I really need all of these channels? Maybe a better choice for you would be the basic package. How about this, if you live an area where you do not need cable to view television why not skip the cable all together. I know this sounds tough, but you are doing this for you.

How about your cell phone? Do you have unlimited calling, text messaging and the works? Consider opting for the basic plan. Don’t think of downsizing as cramping your style, instead think of it this way I am putting this money to better use. I am putting the money I save toward my future.

Belong to the movie club and rent movies every week? Drop the movie club, and opt for renting only once a month instead.

Do you have several magazine subscriptions, half of which you don’t have time to read? Too many magazines can become overwhelming. Choose to keep only a few magazine selections, if you don’t have time to read any of the magazines, then go without. This way when you do buy a magazine you will have the time and be able to enjoy it.

Another way to save money is to comparison shop. Compare prices everywhere you go. A good way to start is by reading the ads in your local newspaper this will give you a heads up, as to who is having the best sell prices.

Do you visit the local coffee shop more than once a day or stop by the vending machine and buy beverages? Consider making your own coffee, save the trip to the coffee shop and when you do stop by, think of it as your special treat. Instead of purchasing beverages from the vending machine, buy what is on sale from the local supermarket and then bring with you.

Does your checking account have fees? Consider changing banks to one that offers free checking. Maybe five or ten dollars a month doesn’t sound like much, but when you are trying to save money, it all adds up and if you are one of those people that have a tendency to have a low balance at the end of the month after paying bills, that five or ten dollars could mean the difference between having or not having an overdraft fee.

It is time for you to decide what is more important. By changing your spending habits you will be able to save more money. Nobody ever said everything was going to be easy, and we live in such a time where a persons cell phone can be seen as fashionable, but consider this, by trimming a little bit off now will give you more financial freedom in the future.
